As a boy growing up in Woodbrook, summertime called for imagination games, and one of the games we loved to play the most was Cowboys & Indians. In true 'Shoot Em Up' style, all the boys would be divided into two teams, with one boy appointed Sheriff of the cowboys, and another appointed Chief of the indians.
To be either Sheriff or Chief was the best, because not only did you get to decide what your team did, you got to be the boss and every body else had to do what you said.
Looking on at the current Administration, one gets the impression that they either never had boy days, or they never played Cowboys & Indians.
I have serious concerns with what I am observing with the current Government who promised much on the hustings but are failing to deliver on that promise, and I am worried for my country and its people.
How do you explain the breakdown in Leadership despite the abundance of would be leaders?
The complete lack of policy framework taking shape on anything and the constant politicking and campaigning led Independent Senator Ramkellawan (who obviously had boy days) to remark to the Government that, not only were they already in, they were throwing stones from INSIDE the fort.
Requiring much spin doctoring, the People's Partnership's love affair is starting to strain under the demands of Office and the conflicting ideologies in trying to live up to those demands.
Rumors abound and notes and emails are delivered almost daily that prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that all is not well in the coalition, despite the public face trying to be applied to a breaking arrangement heavy on promise but short on delivery.
I had cause to say on another topic that the UNC, having achieved Governance, is treating the COP like just another devil it had to sleep with to get there, with the Leadership of the COP being left with a fool's choice; stay in the land of power and plenty, or join Rowley in the desert of Opposition.
I have asked the question many times, if the Partnership is so successful, why not just consummate the marriage and leave the COP garb on the honeymoon floor?
There is no more Panday (well until the Presidential appointment, but that is another story), so the justification is now moot.
Why stay as two separate Parties when they are now indivisible and apparently bound by a similar ideology (power at all costs)?
Why remain a Partnership and not become an Alliance or better yet, one Party now?
It would seem that for all the spin doctoring and misdirecting, the reasons are quite pathetic and are driven from both sides.
I was of the opinion that the Congress of the People, built on the rock of integrity could not be fully integrated with the UNC because that Party could not find its way up that particular rock with a sherpa guide and a map.
Apparently this is but half the truth.
Another significant reason for the resistance is (allegedly) Kamla's (and her controller's) distrust of the Leader of the COP,
Winston Dookeran and his popularity with the electorate in general and among East Indians specifically, most of whom voted for him as Panday's 'Heir Apparent', and whom most still hold in high esteem. His threat to her security of tenure pulls at a thread that could unravel a complicated web and see the whole thing collapse in a heap.
It is no secret that Austin Jack Warner is the de facto owner of the UNC and Kamla Persad Bissessar is his hold on that investment.
There is no room in that equation for things like integrity and ethics, and Winston Dookeran must be kept at arm's length or marginalized altogether.
As they say in Mafia movies, nothing personal, just business.
The very idea of the Congress of the People is an irritant to the power brokers in the UNC, and while some of the COP Leaders are holding true to the Party and its separate identity, others have already changed sides and are only wearing a COP shirt for appearances at this point.
Mark my words, there are powers at work dedicated to the dissolution of the Congress of the People and unless the real Leadership and rank and file membership takes a stand, said dissolution may already be a foregone conclusion.
As it stands, the planned blurring of the two Parties has left the only difference between them being the COP's Westmoorings contingent, who, while finacially strong, is politically irrelevant and whose true political identity is diametrically opposed to the plight of the sugar workers and their Party anyway.
This was always a reaction, a statement and a convenience, and at some point everyone fully expects them to return home to the PNM, whose political ideology is more in line with theirs.
How long does love last in a relationship in which there is no trust?
Moving on.
Another point of concern for the entire population is the racist undercurrent permeating the People's Partnership, and which spilled out of the mouth of the GOPIO Vice President at one of its make believe national functions.
No one from the Government has as yet distanced either the COP or the UNC from those remarks, and one can only assume that Mr. Bisnath was not only speaking to the East Indians in the crowd and in the Government, but for them.
I would like to remind the powers that be that they are no longer campaigning but are in fact the Government of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago. The tone they set on top reverberates on the ground, and racism, the ultimate zero sum game, leaves everyone a loser. The Prime Minister needs to pull her Party and her supporters in line, because that is a job only the Prime Minister can do.
Finally, does Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar have a plan for Governance?
Since the ascension to power we have been treated to reactionary politics and a never ending blame game.
Do they have a plan past the removal of Manning from power?
Many middle classed 'contributors' who joined the 'Do So' craze for the promise of a better day, now find themselves worse off as the economy slowly grinds to what is looking like a looming halt, and are wondering if they in fact cut their own throats in the exchange.
Worse, with expats from foreign Companies (whose projects have either come to an end or have been stopped) leaving, the trickle-down economic impact is hurting the small businessman in his pocket in sharp contrast to the brighter tomorrow promised.
Worse still, the apparent 'Government by Vapse' is having an unplanned side effect, in that this Administration's failure to Govern is making people reminisce of better days under Patrick Manning a mere three months after removing him from office. To the rank and file, the country is falling apart. The anti crime Government is failing miserably at controlling crime, and the other negative indicators are rising while the national mood is falling.
On the heels of a televised clean up, the country is experiencing the worst flooding in its history and the last Administration is being blamed for not cleaning the drains and rivers which this Administration had to clean.
If after all the applause (and back patting and bowing for the cameras) for the excellent clean up job you did, why are we still
experiencing flooding of disaster proportions, what exactly did you clean?Social Services has been reduced to the Minister giving hand outs to the poor and the desperate, complete with press corps for coverage, and one wonders whose grand idea is this? How is shaming people helping them? How much exposure is enough?
Why the need for adulation and attention but little to show in the form of macro policy for the alleviation of the plight of ALL the poor? Can this not be done with the left hand not caring if the right hand sees?
I have applauded young Dr. Ramadhar Singh enough times to know that he gets it, I get it, we all get it, and he should now move on to more policy less posture or risk being over exposed.
Following Jack Warner's apparent battle with 'foot in mouth' disease and Therese Baptiste-Cornelis public meltdown, it is starting to appear that at least on one front the Administration is getting its act together and apparently someone is directing the media glare so as to control public opinion.
Only three months into Governance, the People's Partnership is floundering.
As I have no reason to lie to them, they can use this to their benefit or to their dismay.
Either way I consider myself, the last true independent, as having done my duty.

With Court Judgements and lawsuits tearing at its main investor and Party Chairman, an Attorney General who can't seem to make the simplest, most obvious judgements without convening the entire legal fraternity and a Prime Minister long on posture and eloquence but short on policy and leadership, it seems that this Administration has a lot of Indians but not enough Chiefs.
Something to think about...
I guess even the most intelligent of us can fall for a great PR campaign.
ReplyDeletePS
ReplyDeleteI think you're wrong about the no chief part. You just don't like who the chief is, and his methods.
I heard from a little bird that Reggie Dumas former ambassador to India and columnist had cause to got down to Jack Warner's place of residence and basically tell him. "Breds, stop doing shit, you in gov't now." I wonder if that story was really true and if that COULD explain why Mr Warner since his last "comment" has been generally silent.
ReplyDeleteSMILE....so someone gets it.....I salute you last true independent
ReplyDeleteHave we not risen, we will rise, yes we can, at least Obama's three word mantra brought with it action. Where do we go from here.
ReplyDeleteThe tv6 newscast at 10 p.m. said the Tobago SEA students will not be receiving any laptops. Even though this was viewed on national television, I am still having serious misgivings about its accuracy, if only because we are A TWIN ISLAND NATION called Trinidad and Tobago. So how in all that is fair and decent could the Trinidad students get laptops and the Tobago students none? Does this Administration have any clue as it pertains to governance?
ReplyDelete??? i am having problems believing the information presented on the news stations and news papers. It seems like if something is reported and their is a negative backlash, someone comes out of the blue to say that the public misunderstood the statement, or that it was not said. If that is true well i am not surprised. On the campaign trail it was said for "all" and not just trinidadian students. Soon enough the paramiters would change again. It would then state only students who pass for first choice?? or only students who made a certain grade????....i am not surprised and I am still waiting on the "NOW WHAT" at present i am not impressed at allll
ReplyDeleteVery good article. I a an avid supporter of the PNM but I had reached the point where there were so many people who hated Manning that I actually wanted to see what would happed when they got their "change". Needless to say I am not surprised at the "change" that is occurring but I am very disappointed in the way they practically pissed on the PNM in the public arena and are proving (at least to me) that they are worse.
ReplyDeleteVERY VERY good article, I'm also a an avid supporter of the PNM n I also wanted 2 see wat would happen when the citizens of our twin island nation got the change they wanted n so far it's exactly as I predicted, they got nothing but promises, cuz the bottom line is the PP has no idea how to govern a country n they're jus spinning it up in mud!!
ReplyDeleteTHANKS very much i share ur views a hundred percent i honestly thought that i was the only one who was seeing these very obvious factors in our society. Notice how crime no longer makes the front page of a "certain" newspapers and headlines in our nescasts. Everything that is wrong in our country now is the fault of the previous GOvernmentand yet still we can't see their plans for change shaping up. Once again thanks to you Mr. Alexander Keep up the excellent work.
ReplyDeleteYou cannot fool all of the people all of the time.Trinbagonians are generally smart people and the Gov't of the day cannot fool us by wading in flood waters and giving out food baskets, yes that is important but there are agencies who are responsible for social issues. It's time for our PM and her team to start running the country as a team. They appear disjointed, and incompetent.
ReplyDeletejust me: It is time to come clean, and be open, explain what the real situation is. Internationally there are serious economic issues and countries are trying to deal with what is before them. We need to be honest with the citizens, come clean, explain and establish trust.
ReplyDeleteI told them not to ever bite the hands that feeds u.U know what u have u do not know what u are going to get and yes Manning did warn them all why now they are so sorry watch them they sell we out for what a T-SHIRT and a strong drink shame on them we love u Manning
ReplyDeleteYou are right on target. I really wondered what Mr. Manning did that was so wrong. Never sit on river stone and talk it bad. It came down and you see what happening now.
ReplyDeleteAm with most of the ppl here trinbagonians wanted change come hell or highwater. what are they worried for now isnt dat wat they asked for we will rise who are they speaking about because all i hear is the east indian population have been neglected for far to long. I am displeased about that statement because Mr. Manning and his administration treated everyone equal wat good for trinidad good for tobago. And as they say nobody is perfect atleast if they were there we would have been moving forward.
ReplyDeleteThe purpose of not joining as one party or forming an alliance was - If the election results had come out with them wining outright,(all 41 seats) as they had expected. Then they would of seperate. The UNC would of been the Government with the 23 seats which they contested and COP would of been the opersition with the other 18 seats. Lots of people with eyes did not see that. They only join together to try and through the PNM out completely - BUT MY GOD STILL IN CHARGE.
ReplyDeleteAfter hereing that the East Indian population has been neglected for far to long. I would like anyone to stand boldly and say what the Negors population got and the indian did not get. Who have the most business - INDIANS, Who get the most jobs - INDIANS, Who get the most Scholarships - INDIANS. come on I'm waiting
ReplyDeleteExcellent article. As a public officer I am waiting on state boards so that we could get the job done so the country could run. The country is basically grinding to a halt and we will not like what comes after. People. People wake up. The writing was on the wall before elections. How come we not hearing anybody talk about the issues.. Oh wait.. They in the government back pocket. Shame Shame.. I await the budget. Let see where we go from here....
ReplyDeleteWell its the same thing again but it had to happen so ,african ppl those forget , they want the whole country ,and they still wouldn't be happy ,but wat we have to do is stop supporting them ,dont but @ their food stores ,but @ hilo, tru value ,dont travel in their maxis, car pool ,use the bus ,but that cant happen,we afo trins are fools ,they kick agaist GATE ,the whole thing is ,NEGROS GETTING EDUCATION ,they call MY PRIME MINISTER a dictator ,well he's the first dictator who educates his ppl ,so to me its jus a matter of time like a few months ,she made history as the first woman pm ,she'll make history again as the shortest term PM ,in history ,for TnT, AND around the world ,,and GOD is in charge ,so am not scared ..
ReplyDeleteThere is none so blind as those who deliberately would not see. The writing was on the wall from day one.I still can't believe that Trinbagonians could be so gullible as to fall for politricks engineered by a FIFA smart man and operationlized by a smiling con woman uttering "we will rise." Oh Trinbagonians the vengeance of Moko is upon us.
ReplyDeleteWhen Trinbago voted they voted for change..... did anyone read the articleby either mary King or dooks which stated that free education was oversaturating the economy with educated ppl.. or something to that effect who do u thing this was directed to
ReplyDeleteWhen one regime does wrong and is subsequently replaced by another, is the role of the new regime to find obvious fault with the activities of the former or to locate remedies for these already apparent ills?If the people were complaining of the former and replaced them with you who are also complaining, then what is your purpose, because if we are both complaining then who is solving our issues? We hired you to solve these dilemas not complain or worse yet ask me what to do. So please don't " DO SO!"it reflects incompetence.....JUST SHUT UP AND FIX IT!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd here we go again ,look @ the salaries of these two men who don't even know the culture of this country ,I remember when MR.Grimes of WASA was making a huge salary ,that same witch NOW PM said all kind of thngs ,plus you say MR MANNING give away the country money to , Mr Hart , WAT YOU DOING NOT THE SAME THING ,these ppl come from different back grounds and cultures ,but you taking $106,000, plus to give them to do wat ,well if so give the acting commissioner ,wat is owed to him ,$ 82,000 plus ,because he's doing a good job wit little resource ,but again you'll only can do wat GOD ALLOW YOU TO DO ,..TILL FAILURE...
ReplyDeleteAll who did so , paying the price! Too bad the rest of us are included in paying the price too! This wake up call was needed for our citizens. All that glitters is not gold ...ent!!!!!!!
