Journalistic Integrity & the Express...

What's the difference between a whore and a prostitute?

This was the question posed to me by friends as we discussed the sensational 'headlined' article carried in the Express that names senior members of the People's National Movement in a plot to remove the existing Leader Dr. Keith Rowley by supporters of former Prime Minister Patrick Manning from among the Opposition MP's. (http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/99707564.html).

The story went on to name the 'band of supporters' as Point Fortin MP Paula Gopee-Scoon, Diego Martin North/East MP Colm Imbert, Diego Martin Central MP Dr Amery Browne, Arouca/Maloney MP Alicia Hospedales and St Ann's East MP Joanne Thomas.

Most of the members of the PNM named in the article all deny the story's veracity and swear no knowledge of it in the first place, which begs the question, do the writers at the Express just make stuff up and peddle it?

Dr. Amery Browne, whose name was called in the article as having a position against his Leader and in support of his former (now ousted) Leader was seen to be working the airwaves in a fit of denial of any such plot and more specifically, any knowledge of any such thing.

Even former Prime Minister Patrick Manning was forced to break his self induced vow of silence to weigh in on the issue, which has conspiracy theorists wondering if that was not the intention in the first place. (http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/99738774.html)

Hot on the heels of the 'leaked' (proven untrue) Eddie Hart story, the paper is starting to appear very unreliable if not questionable in their reporting, and that is very murky waters to tread when honesty and integrity in print is your stock in trade.

To many, it is starting to appear that the editorial gaffes being committed at the paper can not be accidental, and the Editorial staff are either grossly incompetent or for sale to the highest bidder.

Was it all a plot to sell papers?

Something in the kitchen not smelling right here, and the Managing Editor of the paper in question needs to be placed in the hot seat and made to answer.

The public needs to know, does the Express Newspaper get compensation in some form or other for printing misleading editorials and fraudulent articles?

The general consensus of opinion in our gathering was, while a whore would sleep with just about anybody, a prostitute provides the same service, but for compensation.

Is the Lady of Independence Square nothing more than an editorial prostitute?

  1. As a former Editor of the Express, I would hate to believe that. But I grant you that that story simply didn't stand up because all the people quoted denied any such plot. In fact, the headline would better have read: 'PNM MPs DENY PLOT FOR MANNING." But I have myself within recent times brought to the attention of the Express some slipshod reporting which, believe me, would never have seen the light of day in my time. Clearly, the paper is flirting with its credibility, a very dangerous game for any newspaper to play.
