There is too much blood being spilled, too many lives being wasted, too many parents crying, too many children being orphaned in this country every day.
The news competes with itself every night to see if it could top its own bar of gore and tragedy, and finds itself succeeding more times than not.
The headlines run the gamut from the grotesque to the shameful and I worry for my country as, while news of piracy is being reported, the grapevine is abuzz with drug running talk and retribution as the real story.
When a woman carrying a child could be forced at gunpoint to abandon her murdered husband as she/they become captors for ransom in the bright light of day we need to realize that something has gone desperately wrong in our society and something needs to be urgently done to address it.
The psyche of the people, the mood of the country is not as it appears and the Government, though long on talk and plans, appears woefully out of touch.
The Police Service is rumored to be corrupt and complicit in the criminal enterprise and nothing is being done about it, leaving the people at the mercy of both sides of the same bad law.
We the people of Trinidad & Tobago have to fix this before it is too late.
We need an effective Minister of National Secuirty visible and willing to use the resources of the state to visit harm on those that would break the law regardless of their position or whether they wear a uniform or not.
We need a Commissioner of Police and a Head of Defense Force visible and on the ground, commanding a force of willing men who can seek out these vestibules of evil and bring justice to them.
We need to act with prejudice and put down this crime wave with a definitiveness of purpose that would send the guilty running for their very lives.
The citizenry of this country cannot take much more of this.
Something has to give...
