Hang Them High...

Kamla Persad Bissesar, the Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago has agreed to convene a Commission of Enquiry into the events leading up to, including and following Friday July 27th 1990, and the failed coup attempt by Lennox Phillip, aka Yasin Abu Bakr.

Ever since that announcement, the support she has garnered has been overwhelming but for a few nay sayers and I would like to go on record as having said, post Independence, this singular act will be the most empowering and liberating act ever done for the citizens of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago.

Why?

Because not only is this country a Democracy (majority rules) it is also a Republic, which in every definition means 'Ruled by Law.'

These men (Bakr & company) conspired with others to break the Law, and, even though they failed at their coup attempt, succeeded at destroying public property, committing treason and cold blooded murder.

To let them get away with this is to embolden others and to undermine the rule of Law, which is EXACTLY what has obtained for the twenty years since and is EXACTLY why we have a crime wave of epidemic proportions.

The new Administration, in trying to beat back the unrelenting and nauseating spate of wanton murder has decided to bring back hanging, which in turn has switched on the debate of if to hang or not.

Switch it off.

The fact of the matter is we HAVE to hang, for a little while at least.

We have to hang murderers so those with scant respect for human life will think twice before taking another's life because they know they will have to pay with their own.

There are those who say that this is not a deterrent to some 'would be' killers, and I say that is the very reason those killers should be hanged.

To remove them permanently from society and protect the law abiding citizenry.

Look, as an analogy, if you get home at the end of the day and find your house on fire, you don't ignore it and have a spot of tea; You beat it back with every thing you have. You kill it. You secure the rest of your property and, after the crisis is over, you return to your tea.

We have to practice selective deafness and ignore the people who say that reform and social programs are more important in this matter. They are important, but not while you have the highest rate of murder in the world. Focusing on social programs now is akin to ignoring the hose and spitting on the fire.

I intend to return to the issue of hanging at another time, I only bring it up here to lead to a point.
The violence that is destroying lives and quality of life in this country has its roots in the failure to enforce the law, and was spurred on by the disgusting and shameful breakdown in policing that allowed Bakr et al to plot his little madness, and the systematic undoing by corruption and intimidation of the rule of law in this land.

Trinidad is on fire, and we the people have to step up and put it out.

There are people who conspired with Bakr, financed his evil agenda and facilitated his enterprise.

These cannot be 'little' people who looked the other way.

Bakr was assisted at every step by corrupted members of the monied class, politicians, customs officers, police officers and others, and these are the people who are not named in the amnesty.

These people can be brought to justice and made to pay for their crimes against the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago.

These are the people we need to hang for conspiracy to commit treason, and conspiracy to commit murder, crimes that have no statute of limitations, and crimes to which the penalty is death.

I need to be clear, if we are going to hang the little 'nigger' boys with gold teeth shining as they swing in the breeze, we have to hang these others first.

Because it is not a breakdown in social programs that led them to these acts. It was plain greed and lust for power.

I call on the Attorney General to pursue the death penalty and to hang the lot of them.

After that, we can all settle down for a spot of tea.

Something to think about...

  2. Only problem with that is that there is no remedy, should we happen to hang the wrong man.

Our legal system leaves much to be desired.
