A friend of mine shared a quote with me the other day - "We are the generation that the world has been waiting for..." and I was bowled over by the simplicity of the idea, the boldness of the thought and promise contained in those few well strung together words.
How wonderful and ideal a concept, to know that we not only have the power to change the world, we are at once ordained and commanded to do it. For someone like me who believes in the power of people power to change the world above all else, this was like introducing jet fuel into a combustion engine built for regular gasoline.
All of my life I have believed that despite what troubles come everything works out for the best, and that the strongest among us are those who forever strive to overcome regardless of obstacle or circumstance.
I have been told and I believe that there is no shame in falling down, only in staying down, that hope lives on beyond despair.
There is a common understanding we all had as children that the world was a place we shared in all its boundless and bountiful splendor with everyone. We need to get back to that place, that way of thinking.
We as a people currently find ourselves responsible for a blessed nation run aground by other people driven by greed and bent on destruction for their own nefarious agendas.
Their acts of cruelty has pauperized many and left countless others in hunger and despair, and we need to be the generation that brings light back to their world, that raises them back up without blame and condescension into our combined national family. There will always be those who seek to divide for their own gain, but they are few in number and easily dispersed. We ned to ignore their agendas, not buy into their scare tactics any longer.
This is not about blame.
Only when we see this land as one pristine river from which we all drink will we learn to love and respect it and by extension each other. We need to remember that even though we are people of different histories, diverse cultures and different hues, we have become one people sharing one home united under one flag.
Our dream of a better tomorrow must start today, must start with each of us and must include each other.
We need to live up to that promise and be the change that our country needs, to bring hope back to the despairing and be a light and an aid to the lost.
Now is the time for us to reinvent ourselves as our best selves and to deliver hope and opportunity back to our land. Where we have to carry our brother, our sister, our neighbor and friend along on this journey we must carry them.
Now is the time to dream again, to believe again; now is the time for hope again, for a vision of a better and brighter tomorrow for us all starting right now.
Starting today...
