For what can only be for pure profit motives, someone is playing with the lives of pedestrians and motorists alike by allowing Movie Towne to construct what appears to be taxi stops on either side of the freeway adjacent to the complex.
Already a disaster as traveling members of the public 'take a chance' and cross the freeway illegally, the advent of these two structures legitimizes a dangerous practice and is going to end in death and dismay by encouraging people to cross the freeway despite the laws to the contrary.
I spoke with the Mayor of Port of Spain on this issue, which he disavowed any knowledge of and referred to this aberration to the highway code as a phantom project and recommended that I speak with the Works & Transport Highways division, under whose jurisdiction the Foreshore Freeway falls.
There are some burning questions that need to be answered, chief among them being:
Who authorized this illegal construction?
If no one in authority, then who removed the highway barriers to facilitate this blatant flouting of both the law and public safety?
Who is financing it?
Who will be liable when the inevitable death and dismemberment occurs when speeding automobile contacts with pliable human flesh?
These structures have commandeered the phrase 'an accident waiting to happen,' and I fear that if the authorities fail to act judiciously and with some haste in this matter, the blood of the dead and the injured will surely be on their hands.
I call on the Minister of Works & Transport to take steps to remove these structures before it is too late for some and far too late for others...
