Listening to the words of Cro Cro's offering for the Calypso Monarch 2011 Compare and Contrast, all I can say is that we as a nation must have evolved past this level of racist hate and prejudice by now, hasn't anyone told Cro Cro?
Here is an excerpt from the song in question:
"Shame on Hazel Brown, look how all yuh have black woman head dragging on the ground. If Rosa Parks was alive hear what she'd a do, put you in de back of de bus and spit on you. So...on you Brown I frown, give African back they head tie and gown. I'm so disappointed in you woman, another lick bottom African"
Really Cro Cro?
So political choice MUST be made based on skin color and no other criteria?
And what of all of this disrespect for a woman who is a long serving activist for oppressed people in this country, is this the standard of your contribution and the level you are stooping to?
Here's more:
"Take example from Indian people, they still have Basdeo Panday on a pinnacle; so Clevon Raphael, Andy johnson and Sprangalang, all ah dem is lick bottom African. All yuh sell we out, look how all yuh have people suffering all about,I waiting for all ah all yuh for emancipation - hypocrite, weak, lying, lick bottom African."
Cro Cro you ought to be as ashamed of yourself for reducing the art form to this.
Regardless of your views on anything, you must know that you cannot sow the wind and not reap the whirlwind; what happens if your East Indain brothers decide to reply in kind or worse?
And what of Dr. Rowley and the PNM, do they support this filth disguised as calypso?
"How come i ent hearing from anybody, how come they don't protest like nineteen seventy, where is Khafa Kambon and Moroko Omay, the so called conscious men ent have nothing to say..."
What exactly is Cro Cro calling for here?
I am not an Attorney, but these lyrics border on the seditious; as a public figure Mr. Weston Rawlins ought to know better and should be made to account for these statements. Like many of my Trinbagonian brothers and sisters I love calypso with a passion, ESPECIALLY social commentary, but to quote my 'judicious pardner' - "dat ent it."
This country MUST observe the contract we sing with and to each other when we sing our National Anthem about every creed and race finding an equal place here, and I call on ALL Political Party and other civic leaders to distance themselves from this obscenity and thinly disguised attack on the country as a whole.
I would like to suggest that if Mr. Rawlins does not like living in a plural, multi-ethnic society he ought to leave.
I would also like to suggest that the National Carnival Commission should not in all good conscience promote this filth to the world as our culture unless it is preceded and followed by a disclaimer that this is the ranting of one immature person whom we tolerate and allow because we try to respect our freedom of speech.
That said, we should also understand that freedom of speech does not give anyone the right to yell fire in a crowded theatre for fun, nor does it give anyone the right to use national events to peddle race hate drivel to the population under the guise of singing calypso.
The plight of the Afro-Trinidadian goes far beyond the recent loss of political power and no racially charged calypso is going to begin to address any of those issues. Cro Cro sounds like a spoilt child throwing a tantrum in this song and I daresay he speaks for no one.
It is clear that we will need guidelines at some point if artists cannot be trusted to regulate themselves, and maybe TUCO itself should supply these as no external agency wants to sound as if it is promoting censorship of any kind.
This is a scandal against all of the people of Trinidad & Tobago, and I sincerely believe that were he to win with this racist tripe it would hasten the demise of the art-form and consign calypso to a fringe act where racists and madmen gather to rant.
Something to think about...

I find that you non blacks real farse and outta place! He sang about bottom licking blacks,he black too, how is that racist??? All yuh just don't want black people to get sense at all, they must be like asses all the time!
ReplyDeleteWhere were you all when Sat Maharaj and his son Devant and the many others ,when they were downright racist and hate mongering!!! Steupsssss!
Conveniently plural and multi ethnic, except when you walk the streets? i fully support cro cro's song and i sing along knowing that it is the truth. He just calling them out on what many of us kept silent on. Too many of us give up on our own too quickly, that is a fact. Africans leave their own too quickly. They nothing less than what cro cro calls them
ReplyDeletemr alexander i love to read your articles but i dont agree with your logic we as afro people are so weak cro cro sang and the afro man comes out and condem him when another race say something about us we say nothing we are always trying to fit in but reality is we are lick bottom african
ReplyDeleteAgreed with the last comment. The Indians not turning against they own ,no matter what. Look at Ish and Steve, Panday is a God, Anand,Suruj,Glen Ramadharsingh is kings. The could kill rape or thief, they still better than black people. I support Cro Cro,he damn right!
ReplyDeletePhillip, you are absolutely right. Cro-cro's song is an absolute disgrace to the calypso competition. All it does is spew hate and bitterness. It does nothing to uplift the art form. But I suspect he wrote it this way on purpose to create controversy and put himself in the public eye.All we need for the farce to be complete is for the judges to give him the crown.
ReplyDeleteNonsense - as one poster said, how is he being racist when he is talking to his own black people? Cro Cro's delivery and tone may be somewhat unorthodox but his points are dead on - black man is indeed the black man's worst enemy ...
ReplyDeleteSo well said Mr. Alexander! Cro has finally taken the art form, (our culture ?) to what I thought would have been a bottomless pit. Our society had declined so lowly that I am not surprised by his lyrics and the comments of some bloggers here. These are the next generation of the parents of barrel children batch number 3, and then they will want to know want really went wrong with T&T. They fail to stand up and be counted. For them it is the wine and jam that always counts!
ReplyDeleteBottomless pit my foot. He took it to the bottom licking level! That is where some Afro Trinis take it to by being in the Partnership!
ReplyDeleteFollowing Cro Cro logic … Africans must stick with Africans, Indians for Indians, White for White….Obama would have never been President of the United States
ReplyDeleteCro Cro right, all yuh ent see the Machel mantano licker,he knows he would win Soca monarch now! At least he lick for 2 million lol!
ReplyDeleteWhat crap --------The last i heard we still live in a democratic society where persons are free to align themselves with whichever political party that they wish -----but what he succeeded in doing is reemphazing the PNM'S ideology----go cro cro
ReplyDeleteLord have mercy on our country, if THIS is the predominant view!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cro Cro! If it wasn't for you and Aloes etc., there mightn't be a winning coalition against the PNM & your mentality. Keep it up - and strengthening the opposition to your & yours.
ReplyDeleteAs an East Indian I must say that this song is well put together, lyrical and well delivered. I cannot agree with the content however. Firstly Bas is on no pinnacle as far as East Indians are concerned. I believe that while most people recognize his contributions in the past we look upon him as the biggest neemakharam for his actions in the recent past. He makes few public appearances now for fear of being insulted for having put down Kamla and other aspiring leaders. I agree with the previous comment that African's people demise is really tied to their attitude. If this song speaks of the culture and values that they hope to pass to their children then we can see hatred and readiness to transfer responsibility and blame to others for their irresponsible and carefree behaviour. This is similar to the chutney singers who pass on the values of alcoholism and irresponsibility to their indigenous followers.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised at the 14 anonymous statements, I would think that at least one person would have liked their name attached to their opinion
ReplyDeleteSo: Christine Kangaloo, Christine Sahadeo, Jerry Narace, Kennedy Swaratsingh, Mustapha Abdul Hamid----- the PNM Griot, Cro Cro, has explained your position to you: BOTTOM LICKING INDIAN. Don't expect respect from anyone, just keep on licking. No-one wants to hear you speak or smell your breath. Any Indian who thinks of voting PNM should keep this in mind. (Bottom licking Arabs and Whites are another topic, wait your turn Faris and Colm)
ReplyDeleteSeems Cro Cro and people who think like him(other races included) prefer to kiss up the posterior of their own than that of another race. Much licking and kissing goes on either of the individual's own race or of another when some people seek benefits and favours.
ReplyDeleteMr. Weston "Cro Cro" Rawlins is a four time Calypso Monarch, one of our national Griots, an elder statesman of Kaiso. His view of African-Trinidadian members/supporters of the People's Partnership as "l--k b----- Africans" and traitors to the PNM has implications for those non-Africans in the PNM (Jerry Narace, Christine Kangaloo and Kennedy Swaratsingh, among others). The PNM has been quick to embrace Mr. Rawlins in the past, virtually adopting him as a spokesman. No comment has come from the PNM leadership about Cro Cro's position. Dr. Rowley's silent assent to Cro Cro's characterization of UNC-COP Africans as "l--- b-----" has implications for the status of East Indians within the PNM.
ReplyDeleteIts simple.. Cro Cro is upset because black people support indian people. Thats why he call them lick bottom african. There is no justification in that we are all free to choose.
ReplyDeleteI can understand people's anger towards the song. N.B cro did not speak for the entire african community. He specifically said that he speaks for himself and a few others like himself. I believe that people ignore the fact that there is still a strong sense of racism in our society. A lot of people are well aware and i am sure that in their private little place, they may have similar thoughts to Cro Cro. The difference between them and Mr. Rawlins is that he has the BALLS to bring it to the fore front. Calypsonians have been doing this for years, whether it's directed towards an individual or party but in a humorous and subtle manner. Cro Cro decided to be straight forward and now he's a villain to society. if he had deliver the composition in another manner, then perhaps, just maybe, there wouldn't be all this buzz.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it racist. Nor was he suggesting that any black person who supports a party other than the PNM is a lick bottom african. In fact, he even defended Robbie when he said the driver can't drive when it was Robbie. What he was pointing out is the fact that some of these african people who have had no hesitation in condemning Patrick Manning, Williams and Robbie are equally reluctant to point out the shortcomings of the Indian leaders. For example DeFosto and they had no problem singing against Manning, but now they are conspicuously silent on some of the very issues which they sang against when Manning was in power, that are taking place now. How come? And he is right!
ReplyDeleteAfro-Trinidadians have been the ones that have traditionally been willing to vote on issues and principle. That's why the PNM could have lost an election 33-3 and 29-12....
When the UNC drew the election in 95 was it? 17-17 and they formed government with the help of the NAR, they were found guilty of mass corruption. And when the next election came about, it finished 18-18... they actually won a seat more! How come? Whereas discontent with the PNM has always resulted in more drastic turnarounds.
The last thing I will add is this. Trinidad and Tobago is a racist society unfortunately. And it hurts! But the man is talking truth. The east indian community (as a whole) has only ever supported the PNM (a perceived african party) twice. After 1970 with Daaga's black power and after the attempted coup d'etat in 1990. African people though have had no problem voting against the PNM in significant enough pockets that the PNM could have lost elections by the aforementioned margins.
All cro cro is seeking here in this song therefore is an answer. An answer to the question that begs... How come these people have lost their voice now? These very persons that were so vociferous before. At least that is what I gather. Maybe im wrong. I await your replies. And will clear up anything i said where necessary.
All who vex about Cro Cro's song have serious issues yes!!! People don't like the truth at all. Let's be honest for once!!!
ReplyDeleteAn interesting calypso..I think that many have not got Cro Cro's point. The way I see it is that it is not a racial tirade but that he is expressing his concern on how black people treat their own. He feels that the East Indian (rightly or wrongly) still has respect for its past leaders while the blacks treat Manning with derision. When I first heard of the controversy around this calypso I thought that he was castigating people for not voting for Manning. However, I could tell that what he was saying was that he feels that blacks have little love for themselves despite of whatever gains they have made through the civil rights movement of the sixties and the black power movement of the seventies.
ReplyDeleteFace it, Trinis Trinidad has always been a racially divided society. Yes there have been improvements but the divisions are still there. I think that Cro Cro means that the system is still weighted against the blacks. His appeal was to other blacks . It was not to stir up hatred against other groups but not to have such self hatred.
