A Lack of Substance... (Show Me Your Motion IV)

Never before has so much been hinged by so many on so little as in the case of the questions and allegations raised in the Parliament by the Leader of the Opposition in his latest motion of no confidence, and I daresay it is a testament to the sheer determination of a few central characters that it is still even in the public domain, causing one to wonder what these same people could really accomplish if they put their minds to issues of substance. Reminiscent of some of the best British comedy in the tradition of Monty Python's Flying Circus, both the absence and presence of a thing are being interpreted simultaneously to be the same thing if required, and on this house of invisible cards the discussion is boldly limping along. Take the media story of the alleged 'bug' found at the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, to this day no one of any credible stature has been able to come forward and definitively describe what, if anything, was found despite it being a front page story, leaving the already bemused public to either draw their own conclusions or ignore the story altogether. Was it a device? Was it a laser beam aimed at the DPP's window? Who found it? How did they find it? What was done with that information after it was found? How come this 'discovery' was withheld from everyone despite alleging to have occurred eight months ago last November?

Instead of answers to any of those substantial questions the people are treated instead to 'aha' moments and conspiracy peddling, where this abundance of 'nothing' is being churned up as further grist for this still unconvincing conspiracy mill and being promoted to a suspecting public as further evidence of conspiracy, thrown in with the rest of the 'it could be true so it might be plausible' semi-evidence offered up thus far.

Now, I have said from the very start that, not only do I believe the motley crew named in that gripping 'novella' read out in the Parliament to be more than capable of these accusations, I believe them capable of much, much worse, but unlike the Opposition Leader and his team I do not possess the abundance of 'chutspah' required to pretend that my assumptions alone ought to be enough to compel others to go gather evidence where I point. I say again, had he used the six months that he waited while the President and the Integrity Commission were alleged to have had possession of this potentially damning if not damaging evidence to attempt to verify and authenticate it, he would have had me as one of the champions of this cause, lobbying for removals from Office and further and deeper investigations.

But instead, armed only with moral outrage and self-righteous indignation and with a fistful of salacious commentary laid out in a format that even he and his legal advisor have admitted that they too found questionable, he stormed the ramparts of reason and attempted to make out a case based on wisps and vapor, yet seems amazed that the rest of us are not swept along with him.

I would like to suggest a reason to him for this failure as guidance for any future forays, and that is, simply put, the people are fed up of all of this nonsense. We've seen this tired dog and pony show before. We have had it up to our proverbial and literal eyeballs. The list of scandals that have dogged our democracy from the moment the Queen said her goodbyes are almost legendary, yet nothing has ever been done to bring any of the accused to justice. The irony that HE himself owes his position in the Parliament to a collapse of the previous incarnation of the government made up of the very party he now leads seems to be conveniently lost in this whole conversation, and his silence since scaling to his loftiest of heights to date on the allegations of massive corruption, widespread nepotism, wholesale theft and other abuses that led to that collapse is almost deafening.

Dr. Rowley, whether you know it or not, the issue here is moral authority; since neither you as accuser nor the other side as accused possess any, we the people would appreciate your not dragging us along in your mock piety and agenda. You want to pull down the government so as to instate yourself? You will have to do that without our help. Yes we are abundantly if not pellucidly clear that we do not trust them, but we are equally if not absolutely clear that we do not trust you either.
