Suspension of Crime Watch due to inappropriate material

[Media Release]

Re: Suspension of Crime Watch due to inappropriate material

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the management and staff of the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad & Tobago for their intervention in the issue surrounding the continuous breaches of the law, the Broadcast Code and common decency that has become the hallmark of the Crime Watch show and its subsequent suspension from broadcast.

Our position was quite clear and aligned with the same code, that at the very least the show should not be broadcast during Prime Time or at any time before ten p.m. at night when children could reasonably be expected to be in bed, such was the nature of the content, parental advisory disclaimer notwithstanding.

The Management of TV6 and its parent Company may yet have questions to answer on the matter as to why the rape of the minor that was broadcast multiple times despite outcry, and we hope that this intervention allows for a message to be sent as to what can and cannot be allowed on the public airwaves. I strongly suggest that they use this opportunity to distance themselves from the culture of sensationalism for ratings that was allowed into their broadcast.

We are also mindful that this matter is engaging the attention of the Director of Public Prosecutions and we wait to be further guided as to the consequence of the action in caption at that level.

Obviously there is a time and a place for everything, and the obvious compromise was always to move the show outside of the prime time as if it did any good it would continue to do so regardless.

We look forward to a renewed understanding of and respect for the decency laws and for greater compliance across the spectrum.

Sincerely,

  2. The mindset which allows the taking of a picture instead of hastening to help the victim by dealing with her attacker is what appalls me. Or was it some kind of set-up to get something sensational to report; even more appalling!
